Pakistan Chief Justice Condemns Sialkot Killing, Orders Probe More at : Pakistan Chief Justice Condemns Sialkot Killing, Orders

Islamabad, Pakistan, Aug 21, (THAINDIAN NEWS) 5 days after a Sialkot mob brutally tortured and hanged two brothers to death, pointing to the heights of lawlessness in the country, the Chief Justice of Pakistan Supreme Court condemned the attack and came down hard on law enforcement officers who stood by and watched the mob proceed with the inhuman action. Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that it is the inaction of District Police Officer (DPO) Sialkot and some other top officials that had led to the death of the duo. He termed the mob’s action as a height of lawlessness which could not be tolerated in any civilized society.

On Friday, The Chief Justice of Pakistan, who headed the two-member bench that looked into the human rights case, slammed Waqar Ahmed Chauhan by saying that such and an incident taking place in front of the police points to the heights of lawlessness that exists in the Sialkot. He blamed Waqar Ahmed Chauhan for the incident and added that no one would have dared to take law in his hands “had the police have the courage and command” to stop the mob.

The two young brothers Hafiz Muneeb, 19 and Hafiz Mughees, 15 became victims of mob fury on August 15. While the Sialkot District Police Officer Waqar Ahmed Chauhan and eight other police officers remained silent spectator, the mob went on with the brutal beating session which led to their deaths. The bodies were then hanged upside down by the mob on a crossing. It went on to become a matter of national concern when the video footage of the brutal crime was aired repeatedly on a private television channel and then played in front of the courtroom.

Bollywood Fashion

As Bollywood fashion goes, so goes South Asian fashion. For the past decade, the designers of the largest film industry in the world have been shaping the fashion of Indian and Pakistani clothing. Recently, Bollywood fashion is transcending and making a major impact on Western style as well. Things weren’t always this way. Let’s learn more about the cultural phenomenon that is known as Bollywood.

Until the late 1980s, Hindi films demonstrated limited sense of style. Clothing was either everyman clothing or way over the top garish. Bollywood designers came to the limelight ever since Manish Malhotra did those catchy numbers for Urmila Matondkar in Rangeela. It was all upwards from there. Bollywood fashion became a force to be reckoned with. When Sushmita Sen appeared in flowing saris in a recent hit, this traditional dress got a big boost into urban style. Shamita Shetty made the sharara a hit with aptly titled “Sharara Sharara”. Finally, Priyanka Chopra made the red dupatta (stole) synonymous with Bollywood fashion.

Hindi films may have inspired Indian style over the last two decades, but the fascinating phenomenon is the transcendence of Bollywood fashion to the West. The recent tunic top craze is one example. Everyone from tween to grandmother is dying to get one. The recent bohemian or ethnic clothing wave is driven by Indian, and hence Bollywood fashion. Most of all, there seems to be no end in sight. TIME, MSN, and even Bella Online are unified in their praise of the hot ethnic trend. The comfort, elegance, and especially the versatility of Indian clothing are not lost to the western public. For instance, various kurtas (tunic tops) can be worn to the beach, a tea party, the mall, or even a grand formal!

Where should you look for hip Bollywood fashion? A local Indian boutique is not a bad start. Another good place is the web. Plenty of sites such as Benzer and Seasons offer good choices. The latest kid on the block is our own Zarmina.com. We offer silk embroidered high quality wears not available anywhere else. What sets us apart is the creation of designer haute couture that is delivered to your doorstep. These designer outfits are of the same quality that prevails in Bollywood scene today. At least 11 districts are at risk of flooding in Sindh: UN

Pakistan went on red alert Friday for extreme flooding in its rich agricultural south, evacuating half a million people from at-risk areas as catastrophic flooding worsened. The nearly two-week-old crisis has affected more than four million across the volatile and largely impoverished country, after floods washed away entire villages and killed at least 1,600, according to UN estimates.
Authorities in the densely populated southern province of Sindh warned that major floods were expected in the next 48 hours in the fertile basin along the swollen Indus river.
Manuel Bessler, who heads the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Pakistan, described the situation as a "major catastrophe".
The meteorological office issued a red alert overnight, warning of an "imminent" and "extreme" flood threat to Sindh, especially along the Indus, as flooding spread to Indian-held Kashmir, killing at least 60 people.
"At least 11 districts are at risk of flooding in Sindh, where more than 500,000 people have been relocated to safer places and evacuation still continues," said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
More than 252,000 homes are thought to have been damaged or destroyed across northwest and central Pakistan, and it could take weeks before electricity and other infrastructure is fully restored.
Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Saifullah Dharejo said that hundreds of villages were flooded in the province and that embankments at Sukkur barrage were being reinforced.
"Some 200,000 people have been evacuated and we are now forcing the people not willing to leave the area.

"Unprecedented rain has also hindered rescue and relief activities, but we are working with army and navy to avoid any loss of human life," he said.
Further north in Punjab, an AFP reporter saw an exodus of people streaming out of flooded villages, wading barefoot through water, cramming belongings onto donkey carts and into cars under heavy rain on Thursday.
The flooding has threatened electricity generation plants, forcing units to shut down in a country suffering from a crippling energy crisis.
Only three of 12 units are now functioning at the 1,200-megawatt Kot Addu Power Company plant, the director general of the state-owned Pakistan Electric Power Co., Mohammad Khalid, told AFP.

The New Stone Age

Louis Vuitton knows a thing or two about getting things done. They proved that twice in Paris on Wednesday, first with a fashion show at the Louvre that started exactly when they said it would (much to the distress of a few tardy editors), and then later that evening, when they hosted a glamorous fête in a hôtel particulier for the brand's very first fine jewelry collection. The foyer, first floor, and backyard had been converted into a disco, and on the floor above there was a darkened maze that led to the display of spectacular precious stones. One of the party's hosts, LVMH's Yves Carcelle, was giving tours to the VIPs. "This is a very difficult cut," he told Michelle Yeoh. "You have to be bold to even attempt that shape, as the stone can crumble with one wrong incision." The actress pronounced herself "gobsmacked."

Downstairs, things were turning steamy and crowded, a trend this Paris fashion week for parties. Leighton Meester, getting some fresh air outside, was only in town for a few days, but said that even with the night's sudden inclement weather, she was in love with Paris. "This city is so great, and Marc's collection was amazing. It'll be hard to go back to New York and back to work on Friday," she said, adding that she doesn't think the giant Afros Jacobs showed this season would be appearing on Gossip Girl. The designer swooped in to say hi to the actress, and then he said something that was no doubt on the minds of more than one fashion person at the end of a month of shows. "Everyone is asking if I'm having fun, and I am," he smiled. "But to be honest, I'm just happy to be standing up right now.

Drive-by shooting, bombings kill 9 in Iraq

BAGHDAD — A drive-by shooting outside a mosque and a series of bombings Sunday killed nine Iraqis and injured 30 more in and around Baghdad, police and health officials said.

It was another day of persistent violence in Iraq, especially its capital. Even though attacks have dropped sharply from several years ago, low level violence and chronic instability continues.

Gunmen opened fire on worshippers as they were leaving dawn prayers in town of Jurf al-Sakhr just south of the capital, killing three and wounding one, said Maj. Muthana Khalid, the spokesman for Babil province police.

The 4 a.m. shooting comes in the first week of Ramadan, a holy month of daylight fasting for Muslims.

Hours later, rush-hour bombings across Baghdad hit commuters on their way to work, killing four and injuring at least 16.

Geo News back in some areas after SC order

Geo News back in some areas after SC order ISLAMABAD: The telecast of Geo News has started to come on line after Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry ordered the same while hearing petitions against the closure of Geo News and other news channels, Geo News reported Friday.

Geo News was penalized for broadcasting a news story involving Zardari’s shoe-hurling incident and eventually the people were kept deprived of any access to the information for six days.

A SC’s two-judge bench comprising Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday and headed by Chief Justice Chaudhry, heard the two identical petitions against the closure of Geo News and other news channels.

Prior to interval of Friday prayer, the federal secretaries of Information and Interior and chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) appeared before the court.

The CJ Chaudhry scolded Chairman Pemra Mushtaq Chaudhry, saying why the licenses of cable operators involved in closing down the telecast, were not cancelled, addressing him, ‘You are violating the Constitution and neglecting your duty.’

The CJ warned if law and order situation breaks down in the country, then its ramifications will go far beyond.

He added cable operators in Patoki would not be held for violating Article-19 and 19-A; instead, the concerned federal secretary would be nabbed.

The Chief Justice elicited written assurance from Pemra chief, saying, ‘If the channels are not restored back on wire, then you would be put behind bars.

After this warning from the higher judiciary, Geo News began to be on air in some areas; however, its telecasts are still not being shown in many places.

Kotri Barrage closed for traffic, as flood approaches

Kotri Barrage closed for traffic, as flood approaches SUKKAR: The high flood tide is fast approaching towards Kotri Barrage from the Sukkar Barrage; accordingly, it has been closed down for traffic of all sorts, Geo News reported Friday.

The flood torrent that broke through after Bhong bund in Ghotki breached, sustained its pressure at Reni Canal.

According to DCO Ghotki Abdul Aziz, at least 10,000 people stranded for three days in catchments areas, have been rescued.

The water is receding at Sukkar Barrage and Guddu Barrage; however, Guddu is feared to receive another massive flood tide pouring from Punjab in the next 12 hours.

On the protest by the local people to buttress Begari Bund, the Irrigation Department started to pile up sand sacks and large stones to strengthen the Bund.

Khairpur’s Alarajageer Bund, Jamshed Loop Bund, Faridabad Bund and Razi Dero Bund are continuously under great pressure from the flood tide.

Pak Navy continued their operation to rescue the people trapped in flooded areas, as over 30,000 people have been rescued to relief camps.

It should be mentioned here that water entered over 80 villages of catchments areas lying between Dadu and Moro on River Indus. The rescue operation to take out the people stranded there, is in progress.

The protective embankments of Mud Mangli and Mekaro near Nawabshah are faced with increasing pressure from the floodwater.

The water pressure started to increase on Bhanot Bund on the bank of River Sindh. Also, the catchments areas of SM Bund have been submerged under water.

The increased level of water at Kotri Barrage has upped the pressure at the protective embankments of Qasimabad, Hussainabad and Latifabad

President Zardari makes first visit to flood zone

SUKKUR: President Asif Ali Zardari sought to fend off Thursday public outcry over his response to Pakistan's catastrophic floods by visiting a hard-hit area for the first time and handing out aid.

The president visited Sukkur, which lies close to the worst affected areas in the southern province of Sindh, where he was briefed about the damages, steps being taken, relief and rehabilitation efforts, officials said.

Pakistan's state television PTV broadcast silent footage of Zardari, who comes from Sindh, wearing a traditional cap and patting the head of an elderly women before visiting Sukkur barrage and viewing the water flow.

A local government official told AFP that he distributed relief goods among flood victims at a camp in a college, assuring survivors that the government was doing the maximum possible to assist them.

“Don't feel alone. We are here with you and will do everything to get you resettled as soon as possible,” the official quoted Zardari as saying.

Pakistan's government says 14 million people face direct or indirect harm from the floods. The United Nations believes 1,600 people have died in the floods, while Pakistan has confirmed 1,243 deaths.

The Islamabad government has admitted to being overwhelmed, and Islamic charities have conducted a highly visible aid effort on the ground.

Writing in The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, Zardari defended his decision not to cut short his overseas tour by saying he had used his talks in London and Paris to drum up desperately needed foreign aid for the tragedy.

“I might have benefited personally from the political symbolism of being in the country at the time of natural disaster. But hungry people can't eat symbols. The situation demanded action and I acted to mobilise the world.”

The United Nations has appealed for 460 million dollars in foreign aid and although water levels are receding in some areas, survivors of record floods are facing grim conditions in makeshift tent cities under unbearable heat.

“The water level is receding in Sindh and Swat rivers and the water tendency is falling at Tarbela dam in the northwest,” Arif Mehmood, Pakistan's chief meteorologist, told AFP.

Another Pakistani river, the Chenab, is also going down, he said.

“We estimate that at least two million require shelter and we've provided a quarter of that already,” Maurizio Giuliano, spokesman for the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told AFP.

“Today the deliveries of tents and other shelter materials has started in Punjab and we're gearing up for Sindh.”

In the south, a mass exodus is turning into a “huge humanitarian crisis”, putting an extra burden on local economies and infrastructure, said Sindh government spokesman Jameel Soomro.

“We have a plan to shift flood victims to tent cities... More than 100,000 people have arrived in Sukkur from different flood-hit areas, which is more than five percent of the city's population,” he said.

In Punjab, one of the worst affected areas was the town of Muzaffargarh, where administrator Farasat Iqbal said up to 400,000 people had been evacuated and rising waters posed a risk of flooding the town in the next 24 to 36 hours.

Doctor Shahid Iqbal at a technical college of the outskirts of Nowshehra, where more than 3,000 people were seeking shelter, said survivors were facing diarrhoea and skin infections including scabies.

Children were suffering in particular as a result of wading through or drinking water contaminated by ruptured sewerage systems, he told AFP.

Three-month-old baby Aisha lay on the floor, screeching in the intense heat, laced with the stench of raw sewage and buzzing with mosquitoes.

“She cries the whole night. I don't know what illness she has, but the doctors told me she will be alright,” said her mother, Shakila. – AFP

Obama Reaffirms Iraq Exit Plan

President Barack Obama says the United States is on track to end its combat mission in Iraq by the end of this month, transitioning from a military to a civilian-led effort. In a speech to the Disabled Veterans of America in Atlanta, Georgia, the president praised the sacrifices of American forces in Iraq, and also underscored his commitment to defeating al-Qaida and extremists forces in Afghanistan.

Though Iraq is now grappling with political uncertainty five months after a parliamentary election, and with bomb attacks in Baghdad and other cities, the president and others in his administration are highlighting the coming formal end of the U.S. combat mission.
In his speech Mr. Obama said the United States is on schedule to fulfill a pledge to transfer security responsibilities to Iraqi forces.

"Shortly after taking office, I announced our new strategy for Iraq and for a transition to full Iraqi responsibility," he said. "And I made it clear that by August 31, 2010 America's combat mission in Iraq would end. And that is exactly what we are doing, as promised, on schedule."

The president said 90,000 troops will have come home from Iraq by the end of August. He noted the United States is in the process of moving millions of pieces of equipment from Iraq, and continues to close or turn over military bases to Iraqi government troops.

The U.S. presence, Mr. Obama said, will shift from military to civilian leadership, with a focused mission of training Iraqi forces, counter-terrorism operations, and protecting U.S. civilian and diplomatic personnel.

While violence in Iraq continues to be at its lowest level in years, the president made a reference to problems, saying terrorists continue to try to derail progress. He spoke about challenges facing Iraqi forces and American troops in their new mission.

Flat deaths mother Theresa Riggi charged with murder

An American woman whose two sons and daughter were found dead in Edinburgh has been charged with their murder.

Theresa Riggi, 46, is in hospital after falling from the balcony of the property where twins Austin and Luke, eight, and Cecilia, five, were found.

They were discovered on Wednesday afternoon after reports of a gas explosion at the Slateford Road flat.

Police in the city confirmed that a 46-year-old woman had been charged with murder.

California-born Mrs Riggi, who had moved to the Scottish capital from Aberdeenshire with her children in July, is reported to be in a serious but stable condition at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Lothian and Borders Police said post-mortem examinations have been carried out and a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.

The results have not been released, but it is understood that the children did not die as a result of the explosion or a small fire in the flat.

The children's father, Pasquale Riggi, also from the US, earlier told of the family's "immense and tragic loss".

In a short statement issued through the police, Mr Riggi, 46, said: "Our family is struggling to come to terms with the immense and tragic loss of three beautiful children.
Thanks to all who have offered such great comfort and support.

"We request that the media respect our privacy at this difficult time."

Mrs Riggi, a violinist who also taught music to beginners, ran a video production company in Denver, Colorado, before moving to Europe.

Her husband, originally from Colorado, has worked for oil firm Shell since 1987 and has been in Aberdeenshire for a number of years.

The couple moved to the UK in 1997, living in Corton, near Lowestoft on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, and in Zevenhuizen in the Netherlands.

They were married in Mrs Riggi's hometown of Bakersfield, California, in September 1989, but the relationship had deteriorated in recent years.

The day before the children's deaths Mrs Riggi was due to appear in the court of session.

The judge Lady Clark issued an order for the family to be found and assessed by social workers.

However, a fax from the court to the council was not sent until the following day and it arrived minutes after the first 999 call.

A court official was also sent to find the family. He arrived too late to discover a police cordon around the flat.

Al Qaeda claims attack in Yemen oil province: Web

DUBAI — Al Qaeda's Yemen-based arm said it was behind an attack that killed at least six soldiers in an oil province last month, and threatened more strikes on government targets.

The attack in the southern Shabwa province on July 25 was among five raids on state targets since June which have been blamed on the resurgent militant group.

Officials have said al Qaeda may have been also behind an attack that killed three soldiers on Thursday.

"Anyone who stands with (Yemeni President) Ali Saleh and his government, and with the Crusader (Western) campaign is against our Muslim people is our enemy and a legitimate target for us," Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula said in a statement posted on an Islamist website on Saturday.

The group previously focused its high-impact strikes on foreign targets but has started to aim at the state in response to enhanced U.S.-Yemeni cooperation in a crackdown that has included air strikes and raids.

Al Qaeda's Yemen-based regional wing earlier claimed responsibility for a failed suicide bombing of a U.S.-bound plane in December, focusing Western security concerns on the impoverished Arab country, which is a neighbor of top oil exporter Saudi Arabia.

Yemen, which is also struggling with rebels in the north and a rising separatist movement in the south, is under international pressure to quell those two domestic conflicts and focus on the resurgent al Qaeda wing in the country.

Iran president: Sept. 11 exaggerated

TEHRAN — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Saturday the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks were exaggerated in a fresh broadside at the United States just days after President Barack Obama voiced willingness to talk to Iran.

Well-known for his anti-American and anti-Israeli rhetoric, the hardline populist Ahmadinejad also repeated his denial of the Holocaust, on which the consensus of historians is that six million Jews were exterminated by Nazi Germany.

Ahmadinejad said the Sept. 11 attacks with hijacked airliners on New York and Washington D.C. had been trumped up as an excuse for the United States to invade Afghanistan and Iraq.

Speaking at a Tehran conference, Ahmadinejad said there was no evidence that the death toll at New York's World Trade Center, destroyed in the attacks, was as high as reported and said "Zionists" had been tipped off in advance.

"What was the story of September 11? During five to six days, and with the aid of the media, they created and prepared public opinion so that everyone considered an attack on Afghanistan and Iraq as (their) right," he said in a televised speech.

No "Zionists" were killed in the World Trade Center, according to Ahmadinejad, because "one day earlier they were told not go to their workplace."

"They announced that 3,000 people were killed in this incident, but there were no reports that reveal their names. Maybe you saw that, but I did not," he told a gathering of the Iranian news media.

There is a published list of Sept. 11 dead from more than 90 countries available online.

A total of 2,995 people were killed in the attacks, including 19 hijackers and all passengers and crew aboard four commandeered airliners, according to official U.S. figures. The United States blamed the assaults on al-Qaida, led by Saudi-born Sunni Muslim fundamentalist Osama Bin Laden.

Ahmadinejad accused the U.S. government of exercising more media censorship than anywhere in the world.

Holocaust 'made up,' Iran leader reiterates
He had previously said the "9/11" attacks were a "big fabrication" and has rejected the historical record of the Holocaust. On Saturday, Ahmadinejad repeated his belief that the Holocaust had been invented to justify the creation of Israel.

"They made up an event, the so-called Holocaust which was later laid as the basis for the innocence of a group," he said.

Ahmadinejad last week challenged Obama to a televised debate on global issues during his trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.

Two years ago he asked to visit the site of the World Trade Center "to pay his respects" but New York police refused.

Washington succeeded in June in getting a fourth round of U.N. Security Council sanctions imposed on Iran to pressure it to suspend its disputed nuclear program.

Tougher U.S. and European measures have further tightened restrictions on doing business with the major OPEC country.

Obama signaled on Thursday he was open to talks with the Islamic Republic and was seeking "a clear set of steps that we would consider sufficient to show that they are not pursuing nuclear weapons."

Ahmadinejad has said he is prepared to return to international talks, which were last held in October, but insists that Iran has the sovereign right to enrich uranium.

Western powers fear the Islamic Republic aims to stockpile the material for possible use, when more highly enriched, in nuclear weapons, and U.N. nuclear inspectors cite indications that Iran is researching how to build a nuclear-tipped missile.

Tehran says it is refining uranium only for electricity and medical treatments.

Israel considers the combination of Ahmadinejad's Holocaust denial and his pursuit of nuclear technology a potential threat to its existence and has said it does not rule out military action to prevent Iran developing atomic bombs.

A Washington-based think-tank with access to intelligence said on Friday Iran had begun using recently installed equipment to enrich uranium more efficiently, a step it said could be justified nominally on civilian grounds but in fact made more sense in the context of learning how to make bomb-grade uranium.

John Abraham and Katrina Kaif pair up for Vipul Shah’s next

It was their sizzling chemistry together that was the major drive in making the film ‘New York’ a success at the box-office. Talking about John Abraham and Katrina Kaif, the two are coming together once again for director Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s remake of the Tamil hit Kaakha Kaakha with Nishikant Kamat (of Mumbai Meri Jaan) as its director and the story line being an action thriller with John playing a dedicated cop bent on ending crime in his city.

Not only this, they will be seen together in ‘Dostana 2’ also. Though the shooting of this flick was set to start this year, it has now been put off till 2011 because director Tarun Mansukhani isn’t happy with the script.

Never mind…. The couple will now re-create their magic on-screen under Vipul Shah’s crisp direction.

Aamir pokes fun at himself for 'Peepli Live'

(Reuters) - Aamir Khan is having a laugh at his own expense. Promotional campaigns for his next home production "Peepli Live", a satire on the urban-rural divide, poke fun at the Bollywood actor.

The 45-year-old Khan has conceptualised a series of promos for the film, one of which involves a television reporter making fun of the actor for attempting to make "Peepli Live", saying "you can't make a 'Lagaan' every time".

"The idea of the promo was to introduce the characters of the film in a funny way and I thought if we are making fun of people why not start with myself," Khan told reporters.

"Peepli Live", made on a budget of around 100 million rupees, is a satire based on two peasants whose plans to commit suicide brings a huge media circus to a small village.

The film stars a host of theatre actors including Raghubir Yadav.

"For all those who think this is a film on farmers' suicides, I want to state categorically that it isn't," said director Anusha Rizvi.

"It is a look at the way global India is struggling with local India and the dichotomy between the two, which is an issue no one cares about."

"Peepli Live" has already done the rounds of the film festival circuit, including at Sundance, and opens in Indian cinemas on August 13.

N Korea says willing to return to nuclear talks

SEOUL: North Korea said on Saturday it was willing to return to nuclear disarmament talks and signaled satisfaction that a U.N. Security Council statement did not directly blame it for the sinking of a South Korean warship.

China, the North’s sole key ally, urged regional powers to put the navy ship sinking behind them and return to the negotiating table to end a cycle of confrontation that has raised security tensions to new heights since late March.

On Friday, the Security Council condemned the sinking of the South Korean corvette Cheonan in March that killed 46 sailors but stopped short of directly blaming North Korea, an outcome hailed by Pyongyang’s U.N. ambassador as “a great diplomatic victory.”

Six-way nuclear talks involving North and South Korea, the United States, Japan, Russia and China have been in limbo since 2007 and a 2005 disarmament deal appeared to lose relevance when Pyongyang tested a long-range missile and a nuclear device.

“The DPRK will make consistent efforts for the conclusion of a peace treaty and the denuclearization through the six-party talks conducted on equal footing,” the North’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said in comments carried by the KCNA news agency.

“We take note of the … statement saying that ‘the Security Council encourages the settlement of outstanding issues on the Korean Peninsula by peaceful means to resume direct dialogue and negotiation through appropriate channels’,” it added.
